For the Swiss Abroad, the further development of digital administration, e-government, is essential. If the government communicates electronically with the Swiss Community abroad means that the ‘Fifth Switzerland’ can exercise its political rights as free of obstacles as possible. Political participation and e-democracy are interrelated and a hot topic. In the current autumn session, the National Council dealt with the federal law on the use of electronic means to fulfill official tasks. It is intended to create the legal basis for an effective digital transformation in the federal administration. This affects the internal federal administration as well as communication with the citizens. On September 21, the National Council followed the Council of States in approving the bill by 144 yes votes to 24 no with 24 abstentions. The no votes and abstentions came from the Swiss Peoples Party (SVP).
